History of Lake Norman

Duke power built a dam across the Catawba River in 1959, creating Lake Norman. Since the lake began to fill, the area just north of Charlotte, (still in Mecklenburg county) has been a hotbed of commerce and growth. Prosperous lakefront towns of Huntersville, Cornelius, Morresville and Statesville on the east side have grown the most rapidly. In recent years, the growth of the west side has taken off, especially as Highway 16 opened up an easy route to Charlotte. Each town on the lake has its own personality. From quiet Sherrills Ford to bustling Huntersville and Cornelius, to the quaint college town of Davidson, the lake area has something for everyone.
